Well for me it was the best day I have had racing, for one reason alone. KAUTO STAR! I can not tell you how much I wanted him to win, but the support, the atmosphere and reception after he had won was like nothing I have ever experienced.
In these difficult times, this doom, gloom and dark clouds hanging over Britain were lifted, momentarily at Cheltenham. Kauto Star is a horse that like the troubled banks has been taken into public ownership! It was like a home match, Kauto Star was what everyone was talking about all day and to see him become the first horse in history to win back the Gold Cup was what they had come to see.
Today for me was not about the betting, although I of course had a serious wager on our hero, it was about support. I have not seen adulation like this since Dessert Orchid, in the early ninties. I was there for Denman last year who got a great reception, but what Kauto Star got from the crowd today was several times louder. Complete strangers were shaking hands, hugging and I even got a kiss from an elderly lady who was just really happy. I can not relate to anything else to describe what it was like. The only glum faces were the bookmakers who had long lines of people waiting to be paid out!
Just Brilliant! We left after the Gold Cup, on a high and well in profit!
I was also on Zaynar and got 11/2, what a price. He is a lazy sort but a very talented one. I hope you were on and had a great day. I fell in love with racing again today! I was already a huge Kauto Star fan, today I am a disciple of the greatest chaser I have seen in the flesh!
